Individual Tax Preparation Checklist

February 28, 2025

Being prepared for tax season means having all your documents organized before you sit down with your tax professional. This checklist covers the essential items you'll want to gather.

Personal identification documents: Social Security numbers for yourself, your spouse, and any dependents. If you're filing jointly, both spouses' information is needed.

Income documents: W-2s from employers, 1099 forms for freelance or contract income, investment income statements (1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-B), Social Security income statements (SSA-1099), and any other income documentation.

Deduction and credit documents: Mortgage interest statements (1098), student loan interest statements (1098-E), tuition statements (1098-T), charitable donation receipts, medical expense records, and property tax records.

Health insurance documentation: Form 1095 showing your health coverage status. If you had marketplace insurance, Form 1095-A is essential.

Previous year's tax return: Having last year's return available helps your tax preparer compare figures and identify any carryforward items.

Bank account information: For direct deposit of refunds, have your bank routing number and account number ready.

Organize these documents early — ideally by mid-February — so your tax preparation appointment is efficient and thorough. The more organized you are, the more accurate your return will be.
